Morris Announces The Addition Of Hanna Axelsson

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The ECU women's tennis team has added a second player to its 2019 signing class as Hanna Axelsson signed a letter of intent, as announced by head coach Tom Morris on Monday.

Axelsson, a native of Lund, Sweden, comes to Greenville after proving to be one of the best players in her home country. She reached the semifinals of the 2018 Swedish U18 Championship in both singles and doubles play. She also helped her team win a trio of Swedish Senior Championships in both indoor and outdoor play.

Axelsson won the 2017 Bastad Corem Open U18 Doubles title. The Bastad Corem Open is one of the four biggest tennis tournaments in Sweden. Rounding out her accomplishments was the 2015 Swedish Junior Championship Cup, which she helped her u18 team win.

Axelsson is the second prep player to sign a letter of intent for the Pirates this fall, joining Raleigh native Sibel Tanik. Tanik is ranked as one of the top players in North Carolina and is coming off reaching the finals of the individual state singles championship.

"We feel very fortunate to have players with the tennis background and talent of Hanna Axelsson and Sibel Tanik commit to our program this early in the recruiting season!" said head coach Tom Morris. "Sibel is ranked in the top-five in North Carolina and Hanna has been ranked as high as No. 3 in Sweden. Both are solid players with experience at the highest level and should have little problem making the transition to college tennis. I expect both Hanna and Sibel to impact our starting lineup in both singles and doubles next year, and as a result give our program an opportunity to continue to improve at the national level. Again, we are very happy to welcome Hanna and Sibel to our Pirate Family!" Â

The Pirates will open their spring dual match season on Jan. 18 when ECU travels to Raleigh to take on NC State.
