GREENVILLE, N.C. – The ECU women's soccer team will play one final exhibition match before the start of the regular season as the Pirates welcome Gardner-Webb to town. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 pm on Saturday evening in Johnson Stadium.
Â
ECU already has a tune-up match under its belt, falling to VCU 3-2 on Tuesday night. Carsen Parker got the scoring started for the Pirates and Courtney Cash added a header goal off a Morgan Dewey corner kick. But ECU could not sustain 1-0 or 2-1 leads and fell to the Rams.
Â
Although the Pirates did not come out on top against VCU, there were signs of encouragement as it was the first time the 16 newcomers played with the 13 returning players in a match environment. The starting 11 was a mix of newcomers and returnees, with six and five each, respectively.
Â
Gardner-Webb is coming off a season where the Runnin' Bulldogs finished with a 4-12-3 record. Much like ECU, Gardner-Webb will attempt to mesh its returners with a large group of newcomers, as the team added 12 players in 2018. ECU will have to keep a close eye on Samuelle Grove and Stina Kleppe who combined for seven goals and 19 points last season.
Â
The two schools have only met twice in official matches, the last in 2009. ECU has won both matchups, taking a 2-0 home victory in 2008 and a 4-0 road triumph in 2009.
Â
Admission is free to all spectators.
