GREENVILLE, N.C. – Coming off its first shutout of the season, the ECU women's soccer team will look to continue its winning streak at George Mason. Kickoff is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m., in George Mason Stadium.
Â
"George Mason is going to be a very good test for us," said head coach Jason Hamilton. "They have played an extremely hard schedule so far and are coming off a very good win."
Â
ECU (3-0-2) won their first road game of the season on Friday morning, beating Richmond 3-0. The trio of Jenna Dages, Courtney Cash and Grace Doran got ECU off to a great start, combining for two goals within the first 14 minutes. First Doran assisted on Dages opening goal, then Doran's pass allowed Dages to break into space and Dages set up Courtney Cash for a tap-in. Dages and Cash both lead the team with seven points on three goals and assist each.
Â
"We will need to take advantage of the opportunities that we get and be very stingy defensively to limit their looks at goal," added Hamilton.
Â
The Pirates are unbeaten through five games for just the second time in program history, following the 2017 team which started 4-0-1. ECU's 12 goals in its first five games are the highest total since the 2002 season had 12 as well and is tied for the fourth best total in program history. It is also just the fifth time ECU has not been shutout in any of its first five matches.
Â
George Mason (2-2-0) is the third A-10 team ECU has played this season, following wins over Davidson and Richmond. In their home opener, George Mason snapped a two-game losing streak by beating Old Dominion 2-1. The Patriots fell behind 1-0 at halftime, but scored two goals in the second half to secure the victory. It was the first time George Mason has scored multiple goals this season after being shutout in two of its first three games. The Patriots were picked to finish third in the A-10 this season in the preseason poll. George Mason leads the all-time series between the two schools 7-3-0, but the most recent two games have gone ECU's way. In 2015, the Pirates won 2-0 at home and in 2014, ECU took a 2-0 road win. ECU is 1-4-0 all-time at George Mason.
Â
"They are a very tough team to play on Sunday because they like to move the ball around," Hamilton said. "We will have to do a good job as a team of shifting defensively and not find ourselves chasing too much. In order to be successful, we will need to have very good communication and need to play smart."
