Men's Tennis Completes Weekend At USC Fall Invite
September 25, 2018 | Men's Tennis
COLUMBUS, S.C. – In the first fall tournament of the season, the ECU men's tennis team got off to a slow start, but finished the South Carolina Fall Invitational strong and left with an individual title.
Â
"We had a lot of mixed results over the weekend but some of that was to be expected," said head coach Shawn Heinchon. "For one reason or another, we lost just about every close match we played in but it felt great to get into some competition again. Congrats to Will Bissett going 4-1 over the weekend. It was the perfect way for us to get up and running for the fall."
Â
The tournament started with doubles play and ECU's three pairs were a mix of experience and youth. The top Pirate pair in 2018, Javier Renones and Wisse Jonker, combined once again to start the fall slate. The pair got started on the right foot by defeating East Tennessee's Juan Lugo and Adam O' Shannessy 8-4 for ECU's first win. The other two Pirate pairs saw the experienced Ronny Georgi and Vlad Anghel team with freshmen Simon Labbe and Diogo Marques, respectively. Both pairs fell in tiebreakers on day one, but Georgi and Labbe bounced back to get their first win as a tandem on Saturday.
Â
In singles, ECU struggled on day one, going just 2-9. But the Pirates turned it around the next two days, going 7-2. The headliner was Will Bissett, who finished the weekend with a 4-1 record and flight C consolation title. Bissett started his weekend with a win over Winthrop's Rhys Jones, before a loss to Georgia Southern's Santiago Suarez put him into the consolation bracket. Bissett then won three straight matches to claim the title, beating Winthrop's Leandros Papyia, Florida's Grey Cacciatore and Georgia State's Patrick Lazo.

ECU will be back in action on Friday, October 5 for the first day of the Richmond Fall Invite.
