Pirates Open Fall Season Strong At Battle At The Creek Invite

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – In the first fall tournament of 2018, the ECU women's tennis team got off on the right foot, winning 18 singles matches at the Battle at the Creek Invite hosted by Campbell.
The tournament started with a dominant effort by the Pirates against Western Carolina. In the eight singles matches between the two schools, ECU won seven of them. Freshmen Minette Van Vreden and Martina Paladini-Jennings both got their first collegiate wins, beating Jacy Smith and Savannah Toranto, respectively. Also picking up their first wins of the fall were Alisa Diercksen, Nastja Rettich, Annija Veinsteina, Hsia Ho Chiao and Victoria Dixon.
In the second singles session of Friday, ECU was once again the better team as the Pirates took eight of nine matches against Davidson. Sofia Anthony bounced back against Alyssa Hahn after dropping her match against Western Carolina, giving all nine ECU players at the tournament a win.
ECU had one singles session on Saturday afternoon, matching up with the host Campbell. The two teams were evenly matched, with each squad winning four matches. Van Vreden, Paladini-Jennings, Chaio, and Dixon all won to finish 3-0 singles weekends for each.
Along with singles play, the Pirates played three sessions of doubles. On Friday, the ECU pairs matched up with Campbell. All four ECU tandems were playing together for the first time, with Diercksen and Rettich winning as did Chao and Van Vreden.
Saturday saw ECU playing two rounds of doubles and the duo of Diercksen and Rettich stayed undefeated by winning a pair of a matches. Veinsteina and Paladini-Jennings teamed to win their first match of the fall against Davidson.
ECU will continue action this weekend at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Celia Ruiz and Lisa Hofbauer have teamed to play in the pre-qualifying doubles and with their 8-4 win over Boise State's Wilhelmina Palmer and Lilian Poling, they are one win from moving on to the qualifying bracket. Ruiz will also be in singles action later this week.
