GREENVILLE, N.C. – After earning the first road win of the season, the ECU women's basketball team will try to complete a Texas sweep when the Pirates take on Houston on Saturday afternoon inside the Fertitta Center.
ECU (13-11, 4-7 AAC) has seemingly righted the ship as the Pirates have won three of four games after starting the AAC slate with a 1-6 record. They are coming off topping SMU 64-54 in the opening game of a two-game roadtrip. Raven Johnson led the Pirates with 18 points, one of four ECU players to score in double figures. Lashonda Monk stuffed the stat sheet, finishing with 10 points, five rebounds, eight assists and six steals. Although Salita Greene scored just seven points, she pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds to help ECU battle against SMU's height advantage.
Monk is ECU's leading scorer, as she averages 13.1 points per game. The sophomore guard is the focal point of ECU's defense as well, having already racked up 94 steals this season. That total is the third-highest single season total in Pirate history and her 4.09 steals per game lead the American and are fifth in the NCAA. Also scoring in double-digits is Johnson (12.9 ppg). Johnson also leads the team in rebounding (6.4 rpg) and has set new career highs in assists, steals and three-point field goal percentage. The Pirates have been especially good when getting out to early leads, as ECU is 9-1 overall and 4-0 in conference when leading after the first and 10-1 and 4-0, respectively, when leading at halftime.
Houston (12-11, 6-4) has recovered from a 6-7 non-conference slate with a 6-4 start in conference to bring its record above .500 for the first time all season. Jasmyne Harris leads the Cougars in scoring, averaging 16.2 points while Angela Harris is scoring 10.2 points. Houston has one of the best offenses in the conference, with its 70.2 points per game second in the league as are its 169 made three-pointers. On the flip side, the Cougars allow 68.3 points per game, which ranks last in the conference. Houston has had nearly a week to prepare for Saturday, as its last game was a 54-52 win at USF on Sunday, Feb. 10.
Saturday's game will be the 21st all-time meeting between the two programs, with Houston leading the series 12-8. Last season, the two teams split a pair of meetings as ECU won 80-78 in overtime behind 18 points from Necole Hope, while Houston won the reverse fixture 97-81. ECU is 4-7 all-time in Houston, although it will be the first time the Pirates play in the Fertitta Center which opened this season.
Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m., on Saturday afternoon. Fans can stream the game here, listen to the live radio broadcast here or follow the live stats here
