Pirates Top James Madison 5-2 In Home Opener
February 15, 2019 | Women's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – In the first home match of the season, the ECU women's tennis team topped James Madison 5-2 on Friday afternoon at the Riverbirch Tennis Center.
"I'm very proud of the way we battled today," said head coach Tom Morris. "James Madison is a solid program and we had to play solid throughout our lineup to win. We responded very well in several difficult situations to win today!"
ECU (3-2) is now on three-match winning streak after starting the season 0-2. The Pirates won the first two doubles matches to earn the doubles point. ECU's 49th-ranked duo of Alisa Diercksen and Lisa Hofbauer had little trouble on court one, beating Abby Amos and Daria Afanasyeva 6-1. The doubles point was clinched when Celia Ruiz and Minette Van Vreden beat Jona Roka and Daniela Voloh 6-3 on court two.
ECU got off to a slow start in singles, winning just two of the six first sets. One of those first sets did lead to a point for the Pirates as Diercksen beat Voloh 6-1, 6-4 on court three, making the score 2-0 in favor of ECU.
James Madison rallied to tie the match at two with consecutive singles wins. Ruiz fell to Amos 6-4, 6-4 on court two and then Van Vreden could not keep up with Emma Peterson on court five, losing 7-6, 6-1.
With three matches to go and ECU having dropped the first set in two of them, the Pirates looked to be in jeopardy. However, a quick boost came when Martina Paladini-Jennings beat Roka 7-6, 6-2 on court four to regain the lead. The momentum continued when Hofbauer (on court one) and Nastja Rettich (on court six) won their respective second sets to force a decisive third set.
The match was clinched when Hofbauer finished off a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Afanasyeva, the third straight win for Hofbauer. ECU added an insurance point when Rettich beat Martina Los Arcos Balasch 6-7, 6-3, 6-3.
ECU will be back on the courts on Saturday afternoon against Campbell. First serve is scheduled for 12 noon inside the ECU Indoor Tennis Center.
