GREENVILLE, N.C. –After nearly a month of play and four matches under its belt, the ECU women's tennis team will finally get the chance to play in front of its home crowd when the Pirates host James Madison and Campbell this weekend.
"We have two very competitive matches this weekend in James Madison and Campbell," said head coach Tom Morris. "The doubles point will be key, as will our ability to battle hard and play well throughout our entire lineup. We look forward to the opportunity to play our first of six straight home matches this weekend. " Â
ECU (2-2) is coming off a successful weekend against a pair of AAC opponents. The Pirates got their first win of the season by topping Tulane 4-1 on the road and followed it with a neutral site victory over Memphis by the score of 4-2.
Lisa Hofbauer picked up a pair of wins on court one over the weekend, as did Alisa Diercksen on court three. ECU also welcomed back Celia Ruiz, who had missed the first two matches due to injury, with the three-time All-AAC selection winning her first match back on court two. Also adding wins on the singles side was Minette Van Vreden and Martina Paladini-Jennings.
In doubles, Diercksen and Hofbauer continue to be ranked No. 49 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and have a 6-4 record on the season. Also adding wins over the weekend was the pairing of Hsia Ho Chiao and Nastja Rettich as well as the duo of Ruiz and Van Vreden.
James Madison (4-2) is coming off a 4-1 loss at Indiana, the fifth straight match the Dukes had played away from home. Abby Amos leads James Madison with a 13-7 singles record and is 4-2 on court two. Emma Peterson and Daniela Voloh are both 12-6 for the Dukes, with Peterson a dominant 5-1 on court five. In doubles, Amos and Voloh have a team-best 8-7 record and are 3-3 on court one.
Campbell (3-4) knocked off NC Central 7-0 in its most recent match. Ana Castillo has held the top court for the Camels most of the year, going 2-3 there and 3-3 overall. In doubles, Cutura and Alexandra Nicoara have a team-best 2-1 record. The two teams met in the fall at the Campbell Fall Invitational. There, Van Vreden, Paladini-Jennings, Chiao and Victoria Dixon beat Camel opponents in singles while the tandems of Diercksen and Rettich as well as Chiao and Van Vreden won in doubles.
Friday's match will get started at 1 p.m., as the Pirates and Dukes will meet at River Birch Tennis Complex. First serve for Saturday's match between ECU and Campbell is slated for 1 p.m., inside the ECU Indoor Tennis Center. The Pirates had originally scheduled a second match on Saturday against Winston-Salem State, but due to the inclement weather that match has been postponed.
