GREENVILLE, N.C. - The ECU men's golf team will travel to Puerto Rico this weekend to compete in the Puerto Rico Classic tournament hosted by Purdue University. The three-day event will be held on the River Course at the Rio Mar Resort in Rio Grande.
The 15 teams in the field will begin the 54-hole event at 8 a.m. on Sunday, February 17. This is the second straight year that the Pirates have taken part in the tournament, finishing ninth last season.
The Puerto Rico Classic will feature five top-25 teams, including No.4 Georgia Tech, No. 5 Alabama, No. 12 Clemson, No. 13 Oklahoma and No. 20 Georgia. The remainder of the field consists of Iowa, Marquette, Maryland, Middle Tennessee, NC State, Ohio State, Purdue, UNCG and Virginia Tech, seven of which are ranked the Golfstat Top-100.
"We are excited to go back down to Puerto Rico to play against a top notch field this week", ECU Head Coach Andrew Sapp said. "We have been able to have some great preparation since our last event and with three guys playing this week who played down there last year for us it will be familiar territory for them."
Competing for the Pirates will be Blake Taylor, Patrick Stephenson, A.J. Beechler, Tim Bunten and Chris Akers. Taylor carded a 2-over 215 at the event last season and finished tied for 14th-place. Stephenson fired a 9-over and Butnen shot 16-over. ECU enters the tournament following a ninth-place finish at the Sea Best Invitational at TPC Sawgrass.
