Pirates Finish Road Trip With 4-2 Win At Bryant
February 17, 2019 | Men's Tennis
CUMBERLAND, R.I. – With a come-from-behind victory, the ECU men's tennis team beat Bryant 4-2 on Sunday morning to finish its road trip undefeated.
"Great match, really have a lot of respect for Bryant, they compete so hard," said assistant coach Ian Van Cott. "They really took it to us in doubles, but we were able to get off to enough good starts in singles to turn it around. All in all, a great road trip for our guys, but we cannot be satisfied. We have to continue to push to get better as we head into the next part of our season."
ECU (10-1) is now off to its best start since opening the 2012-13 season with 11 wins in its first 12 matches. The Pirates are also 4-0 on the road already this season.
The doubles point came down to the third match after the two teams split the first two. ECU fell behind when Austin Allen and Diogo Marques fell to Wilson Dong and Trent Massam 6-3 on court one. The Pirates answered with Simon Labbe and Vlad Anghel beating Andrew Corrado/Phillip Belmatch 6-4. It was the third win of the weekend for Labbe and Anghel, who had not played together before starting this road trip.
Bryant took the doubles point when Michael and Scott Plutt beat Javier Renones and Wisse Jonker 6-3 on court two.
ECU steadily righted the ship, starting with winning five of the six first sets during singles. Renones was especially strong, winning six straight games to open his match and putting the finishing touches on a 6-0, 6-2 win over Scott Plutt on court four to tie the score at 1-1.
The Pirates took the lead with a pair of wins in quick succession. First, Anghel topped Michael Plutt 6-3, 6-4 on court two. Jonker added a third point when he beat Massam 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) on court three.
Bryant kept the match going when Dong beat Marques 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 on court one. That reprieve was short live though, as Ronny Georgi beat Belmatch 6-2, 6-4 on court five to clinch the win for ECU.
ECU will again be on the road next weekend for a pair of matches. First up will be a neutral site match against Stetson on Saturday, Feb. 23, followed by a match against Georgia Southern on Sunday, Feb. 24. Both matches will be played in Statesboro, Ga.
