GREENVILLE, N.C. – Undefeated away from home this season, the ECU men's tennis team will try to continue its great start with matches against Stetson and Georgia Southern in Statesboro, Ga.
Â
"It should be a couple great matches for us this weekend," said head coach Shawn Heinchon. "This will be the first time we have played Stetson and they will be a tough test for us for sure. As for Georgia Southern, we seem to have very tight matches with them every year. I'm looking forward to that being the case again this weekend"
Â
ECU (10-1) is off to its best start since the 2012-13 season when the Pirates started the season 11-1. The Pirates four road wins this season already tie last season's total as well. ECU is coming off a 3-0 road trip that included a win over conference foe Connecticut.
Â
Wisse Jonker and Diogo Marques both have a team-high 16 singles wins for ECU this season. Jonker is a team-best 10-1 in dual matches, all coming on court three. Vlad Anghel is third on the team with a 13-8 record and he was recently named the American Men's Tennis Player of the Week after going 3-0 on court two during the road trip. Javier Renones made his return from injury at UConn and he is 7-0 in dual matches and 13-7 overall in singles this season. Also in double figures is Will Bissett, with a 10-6 overall record and a perfect 6-0 dual match ledger.
Â
In doubles, Anghel's perfect weekend extended to doubles as he partnered with Simon Labbe to go 3-0. The pairings of Austin Allen and Marques as well as Labbe and Renones each have six wins so far to top the Pirate leaderboard.
Â
Stetson (4-5) is also coming off a three-match road trip, as the Hatters went 2-1 as they took on Tennessee Tech (L, 4-3), DePaul (W, 4-3) and Florida Atlantic (L, 4-0) in Boca Raton, Fla. Clement Hamel leads Stetson with a 7-3 record, including 6-1 on court two. Hamel and Coilin MacNamara form the top doubles tandem by record, going 3-4 on court two.
Â
Georgia Southern (5-2) is already 4-0 at home this season, although the Eagles are coming off a 6-1 loss at UNC Wilmington. Antonio Muniz leads Georgia Southern with a 6-1 singles mark, all coming on court two. JC Alcala and Stefano Di Aloy have split the matches on court one, as Di Aloy is 3-1 there while Alcala is 2-0. In doubles, the Eagles are 11-5 as a team, going 4-2 on court one, 4-1 on court two and 3-2 on court three.
Â
ECU will matchup with Stetson in a neutral site match on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. The Pirates will then take on Georgia Southern at 11 a.m., on Sunday, Feb. 24. Both matches will take place at the Wallis Tennis Center in Statesboro, Ga.
