February 22, 2019 | Volleyball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Sophomore Shelby Martin and freshman Janiece Jefferies, who are both setters for the ECU volleyball program, are set to take part in the USA Volleyball National Team open tryouts scheduled for March 1-3 at the U.S. Olympic Traning Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Â
The tryout will evaluate athletes from 87 colleges from across the country for spots on the U.S. Women's National Team and the U.S. Collegiate National Team program. U.S. Women's National Team Head Coach Karch Kiraly will direct the entire tryout process.
Â
"I am really excited to see ECU volleyball grow on a national and international level," head coach Julie Torbett said. "We currently have three professional players and now two current players trying out for the collegiate national team. I am so proud of Shelby and Janiece for taking part of their spring break to Colorado Springs and train with the best college players around the country. Shelby went last year and it was an amazing experience for her. Janiece is following in her footsteps and will benefit greatly from the tryout."
Â
Martin, a two-time All-American Athletic Conference Second-Team selection, finished her sophomore season ranked fourth in the conference in assists per set (8.80) and 13th in hitting percentage (.274). She was the first player in program history and the only AAC player in 2018 to record a triple-double, notching 10 kills, 34 assists and 14 digs in a five-set match at Memphis Oct. 28. Martin also recorded a team-high 10 double-doubles with eight occurring in American Conference matches.
Â
With two seasons of eligibility remaining, Martin has tallied 1,920 assists which puts her ninth on the program's career list. She also carries a career .268 hitting percentage – a mark that is currently sixth in school history.
Â
The tryout will involve four sessions with three waves per session. Friday's first session goes from 2-8 p.m. MT, while Saturday's sessions are at 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. The final session on Sunday begins at 7:30 a.m. MT with tournament style play, along with 16-18 athletes selected by the U.S. Women's National Team staff to participate in a "USA" training session. The Sunday session wraps up at 10:30 a.m. MT.
