February 23, 2019 | Women's Tennis
GREENIVLLE, N.C. – It was another dominant win for the ECU women's tennis team, who cruised past UNC Greensboro 6-1 on Saturday afternoon inside the ECU Indoor Tennis Center.
Â
"We played well overall today," said head coach Tom Morris. "I am very proud of the way we battled throughout our lineup in both singles and doubles."
Â
ECU (6-2) has won six straight matches since starting the season with consecutive losses to ACC foes. The Pirates are also now 4-0 at home this season.
Â
The Pirates have settled into a nice rhythm in doubles during the streak, as the same three pairs have played every match and ECU has won the point In five of the six matches. On Saturday, the duo of Hsia Ho Chiao and Nastja Rettich got the Pirates started with a 6-1 win over Sophia Adams and Tayah Cross on court three. ECU claimed the point when Lisa Hofbauer and Alisa Diercksen beat Nancy Bridges and Brianna Gomez 6-2 on the top court.
Â
In singles, ECU used wins from its top three players to clinch the match in short order. Celia Ruiz wasted little time winning on court two, as she beat Adams 6-1, 6-0. Hofbauer won her sixth straight match at No. 1 singles by topping Bridges 6-1, 6-2. The match was laid to rest when Dierksen closed out a 6-4, 6-2 win over Barquero on court three. Diercksen is also 6-0 during the winning streak.
Â
Despite the match being decided, ECU fought on the other three courts. Rettich beat Cross 6-1, 6-1 on court six. The Spartans got their only point of the day when Gomez beat Martina Paladini-Jennings 7-6, 6-3 on court four. The day came to an end when Minette Van Vreden beat Eugenia Camacho in a three set match, as the final score was 3-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-7) on court five.
