GREENVILLE, N.C. – After a week between games, the ECU women's basketball team moves into the final two games of the regular season as the Pirates travel to Tulsa on Saturday afternoon.
Â
ECU (13-14, 4-10 AAC) is under .500 for the first time this season after falling to Cincinnati at home for its third straight loss. The Pirates played the Bearcats even in the second half, but a 45-29 rebounding advantage and a 15-8 edge in second chance points helped Cincinnati claim a 68-57 win. ECU was led in scoring by Lashonda Monk, who made all eight of her free throw attempts on the way to 16 points. Monk finished the game with five steals, becoming just the third Pirate with 100 steals in a single season and she is fifth in the country with 4.00 steals per game.
Â
Also scoring in doubles figures against the Bearcats was Destiny Campbell (14 points) and Alex Frazier (12 points). Campbell is fourth in the AAC in blocked shots, averaging 1.4 per game. As a team, the Pirates average 11.3 steals, which leads the American and is 18th in the country. Should Frazier play in the final two games of the regular season, she will move into the top-25 all-time in games played at ECU. The senior guard has improved her scoring in conference games, improving her average from 4.9 ppg during non-conference games to 10.2 in conference games.
Â
Tulsa (12-15, 6-8 AAC) still has a chance to finish as high as fifth in the conference standings after beating Temple 64-61 to snap a three-game losing streak. The Golden Hurricane are 8-5 at home this season. Crystal Polk is tenth in the conference in scoring (13.0 ppg) and ninth in rebounding (7.3 rpg). Alexis Gaulden is also scoring in double figures, averaging 12.0 points as well as leading Tulsa with 123 assists, which places her third in the American. The Golden Hurricane struggle to prevent teams from making shots, as Tulsa is dead last in the conference in opposing team's field goal percentage (.414).
Â
Saturday's matchup will be the second time this season and the 22nd time in history that the two programs have met. Tulsa won the first contest in January, leaving Minges Coliseum with a 75-55 win. Raven Johnson led ECU with 17 points that day while Frazier had a double-double (10 points and 10 rebounds). Polk (22 points and 14 rebounds) and Desiree Lewis (16 points and 13 rebounds) both had double-doubles for the Golden Hurricane. ECU is 3-5 all-time at Tulsa, although the Pirates did win at the Reynolds Center 59-57 last season, behind Frazier's 16 points.
