GREENVILLE, N.C. – After having its five-match winning streak snapped, the ECU men's tennis team will try to start a new streak, first by hosting Jacksonville State on Saturday afternoon at the River Birch Tennis Complex.
Â
"It's always good to be playing at home," said assistant coach Ian Van Cott. "We have to come out ready to go from start to finish in order to give ourselves the best chance to be successful on Saturday."
Â
ECU (10-2) has had a full week to lick its wounds after falling to Stetson 4-2 in Statesboro, Ga. The match could have gone either way, with the clinching point going to Stetson in a third-set tiebreaker while ECU was leading on the final court. The Pirates will be back on their home court for the first time in four matches and will be playing at River Birch Tennis Complex for the first time this season after playing the first six home matches indoors at the ECU Indoor Tennis Complex.
Â
Wisse Jonker leads the Pirates with a 17-6 overall record and he is 11-1 in singles dual matches. Diogo Marques is right behind him with a 16-9 overall record, including 4-3 on court one. Javier Renones is on the longest current winning streak for ECU, having won all eight of his dual matches this season, the majority coming on court four. Vlad Anghel has a 13-9 record and is 8-4 while splitting his time between courts one and two. Will Bissett is the fifth Pirate with 10 singles wins this season.
Â
In doubles, Simon Labbe and Renones lead the team with a 6-1 record while Austin Allen and Diogo Marques are 6-3. Despite using 16 doubles tandems already this season, ECU is 33-26 in doubles matches and 19-13 in dual matches.
Â
Jacksonville State (7-0) has yet to lose this spring and has allowed more than one point on just one occasion this season. The Gamecocks are coming off consecutive 6-1 wins over Alabama State and North Alabama and are 5-0 on the road this year. Joaquin Vallejo leads the team with a 5-1 singles record, all on court two while Alijaz Kaplja is 4-1 on court one. In doubles, Vallejo and Alexand Vishnevskiy are 5-0 on court three to lead Jacksonville State.
Â
First serve is scheduled for 12 noon on Saturday afternoon.
