Slow Start Costs ECU At William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, VA. – A slow start was too much to overcome as the ECU men's tennis team lost to William & Mary 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at Millie West Tennis Facility.
"William & Mary always seems to have good doubles and today was no exception," said head coach Shawn Heinchon. "They beat the crap out of us in doubles and we never really got back on track. We were a poor version of ourselves in singles and they did a good job of staying in control of the match. This was a good poke in the chest for us and was probably the worst we have played all year. But that happens, it's no time to start feeling sorry for ourselves. We will get right back to work tomorrow to get ready for UNC Greensboro."
ECU's top duo of Wisse Jonker and Javier Renones played William & Mary's partnership of Chen Ruo and Brenden Volk even, with the match tied at 5-5 when it finished. The
Tribe claimed the doubles point after Oren Vassar and Tristan Bautil beat Ronny Georgi and Simon Labbe 6-1 on court two followed by Finbar Talcott and Sebastian Quiros topping Vlad Anghel and Will Bissett 6-4 on court three.
William & Mary pressed its advantage in singles play, winning four of the six first sets. Volk beat Jonker 6-1, 6-2 on court two and then Quiros finished a 6-3, 6-1 win over Anghel on the top court to put ECU on the edge of defeat.
The loss was momentarily averted when Georgi beat Vasser 6-1, 6-4 on court four. However the match came to an end after Renones fell to Talcott 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) on court four.
ECU has a midweek match against UNC Greensboro on Wednesday afternoon. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
