GREENVILLE, N.C. – With losses in three of its past four matches, the ECU men's tennis team will try to right the ship with a midweek match at UNC Greensboro on Wednesday afternoon.
Â
"UNC Greensboro is a team we get to battle with every year and they are always 50-50 type matches," said head coach Shawn Heinchon. "We need to get 100% healthy and play well in doubles to give ourselves the best chance at success. This time of the year, it just comes down to playing solid tennis on the bigger points"
Â
ECU (11-4) has lost two straight matches for the first time this season. After starting the season 4-0 on the road, the Pirates have dropped consecutive road matches at North Florida and William & Mary.
Â
Diogo Marques (17-10) and Wisse Jonker (17-9) both lead ECU in singles victories. Marques' five wins on court one are the most by an ECU freshman since Jaroslav Horvath won six matches at No. 1 during the 2007-08 season. Javier Renones (16-8) had his 10-match winning streak snapped at William & Mary, but it was still the second time in his career that Renones won at least his first 10 dual matches of the season, after winning his first 15 in 2017-18.
Â
In doubles, Jonker and Renones lead the team with a 7-3 record. They have a 24-5 record as a pairing, the most wins over a two year span since Vlad Anghel and Frederic Lehfeldt won 26 matches between the 2016-17 and 2015-16 seasons. ECU is 23-17 (.575) in doubles matches during dual match season and has won the doubles point in nine of 15 matches.
Â
UNC Greensboro (4-8) is coming off a 6-1 win over Presbyterian to snap a three-match losing streak. It was the most dominant win of the season, as the Spartans' first three wins this season were all 4-3 triumphs. Just two Spartans have a singles record that is at or above .500, led by Ollie Palmer's 6-5 mark. Palmer is 2-1 on court one and 4-4 on court two. Nico Grewe has also spent time on the top two courts, going 3-6 on No. 1 and 3-0 on No. 2. In doubles, Grewe and Palmer are 8-3 as a duo, all on the top court. UNC Greensboro is just 7-15 on the other two doubles courts though. Last season, ECU beat Greensboro 4-1 at home, with Ronny Georgi getting a win in singles.
