March 19, 2019 | Volleyball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Jaylibeth Garcia, a 6-1 middle blocker who hails from Bayamon, Puerto Rico, has signed a national letter of intent to attend East Carolina University and compete for the volleyball program beginning in the fall of 2019 according to an announcement Tuesday by head coach Julie Torbett.
Â
"Middle blockers are hard to come by, especially middles that have the skill set of JB," Torbett said. "She is tall and experienced at the international level. She likes to run the slide off of one foot and is quick. She is also a very determined and driven person. We look forward to getting her plugged into our system and continue her growth."
Â
Garcia helped lead Puerto Rico to a fifth-place finish at the 2018 NORCECA U20 Championship and was named the best overall blocker as well as the second-best middle blocker of all tournament players. She ended the event with 28 kills, including 10 against Honduras, 12 blocks and nine aces for a total of 49 points.
Â
At the 2016 AAU Junior National Championships, Garcia's Club Puerto Rico posted a seventh-place result in the 18 International Division. She played her high school volleyball for Bayamon Military Academy.
Â
Garcia joins 2017 Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year and University of Wyoming transfer setter Marissa Harmon as well as Virginia first-team all-state outside hitter Chloe Wilmoth as new Pirates who will suit up for the 2019 campaign.
