GREENVILLE, N.C. – With just four matches remaining in the regular season, the ECU men's tennis team hits the road to take on American foe Temple on Saturday morning.
Â
"You never want to say one match is way more important than another, but because we don't get to play everyone within the conference, these conference matches seem to be just a little bit spicier," head coach Shawn Heinchon. "Which our guys love. Temple is a tough team to beat anywhere, let alone at their home courts. They have been playing really well as of late so we are going to need to be at our best.Â
We are looking forward to getting up there and having a great battle."
Â
ECU (13-4) has righted the ship with two straight wins after a stretch that saw the Pirates lose three of four matches. The Pirates have taken on just one AAC opponent this season, beating Connecticut 4-0.
Â
Diogo Marques leads ECU with a 19-10 singles ledger, including going 7-4 on the top court. Wisse Jonker is right behind him with an 18-10 record. Javier Renones has been ECU's best player during dual matches, going 12-1 in the spring and is 18-8 overall. Will Bissett (13-7) and Ronny Georgi (12-5) have both won three straight matches for ECU to provide depth on courts five and six while Vlad Anghel (15-12) has been steady at No. 2.
Â
In doubles, Marques and Austin Allen lead ECU with an 8-3 record, including 5-0 on court two, while Jonker and Renones are 8-4 as a duo.
Â
Temple (8-6) has won three straight matches, all at home. The Owls were dominant in those three matches, outscoring opponents 20-1. Mark Wallner leads Temple with an 18-5 singles mark. Paolo Cucalon (14-6) and Uladzimir Dorash (14-9) are both in double-figures in singles wins. Wallner and Alberto Caceres Casas lead Temple with an 18-5 doubles mark and are No. 58 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Rankings. Last season, Temple came to Greenville and ECU earned a 5-2 win, with Georgi, Jonker and Renones winning singles matches.
Â
First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m., at the TU Pavilion.
