GREENVILLE, N.C. – Just two matches remain in the regular season for the ECU men's tennis team, which hosts Campbell at 2:30 p.m., on Thursday afternoon at the River Birch Tennis Complex.
Â
"Campbell has had a great year and likely will win the Big South Conference so no doubt we will have to play well if we are to beat them on Thursday," said head coach Shawn Heinchon. "We are looking forward to having our four seniors Austin (Allen), Will (Bissett), Ronny (Georgi) and Vlad (Anghel) play their final home match at ECU. They have meant a lot to our program these last four years. It should be a great day of competition and we are hoping we can send our seniors out with a bang"
Â
ECU (13-5) has not played since March 30 when the Pirates lost to Temple 4-2 in Philadelphia. The Pirates won the doubles point against the Owls, but could not hold onto the lead. Javier Renones was the only Pirate to win his singles match, moving him to a team-best 19-8 record.
Â
Thursday's match will be the final home match of the season for ECU and the Pirates will honor four seniors. The quartet of Vlad Anghel, Ronny Georgi, Will Bissett and Austin Allen have gone a combined 197-110 (.642) in singles through their four seasons. Anghel has spent the majority of his career on courts one and two and is 15-12 this season, the third straight year he has won at least 15 matches. Georgi has cracked 10 wins in all four seasons in Greenville, including finishing second on the team last year with a 20-7 ledger. Bissett has been nearly unbeatable in dual matches the past two seasons, going a combined 17-4. Allen has formed a successful partnership with freshman Diogo Marques this season, with the pairing going 9-3 this year.
Â
Campbell (13-4) is looking to finish its regular season on an eight-match winning streak and with victories in 14 of its final 15 matches. The Camels will take on Radford at home on Wednesday, before closing their regular season in Greenville. Bastien Huon leads Campbell with a 23-12 ingles record, including 10-2 on court two. Raphael Calzi (17-12), Gerard Sola (16-11) and Dustin Warner (16-13) are the other Camels with at least 10 wins and Werner has played the majority of the season on court one. In doubles, Calzi and Werner lead the squad with a 16-9 record, including 11-4 on the top court. Campbell has gone 29-12 (.707) in doubles during dual matches, winning the doubles point on 12 occasions. The two teams will be meeting for the first time since 2017 when Campbell earned a 5-1 home victory.
