Bissett Helps ECU Beat Campbell On Senior Day
April 11, 2019 | Men's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – On Senior Day for the ECU men's tennis team, Will Bissett came through with a three-set win to help the Pirates clinch a 4-2 win over Campbell on Thursday afternoon at the River Birch Tennis Complex.
"What a great fight and competitive effort by our guys today," said head coach Shawn Heinchon. "We couldn't be prouder of them. It was a fitting way for us to win the match, by having Will Bissett, one of our seniors, clinch it for us on Senior Day. He deserves it."
The match was close from the first serve. ECU got ahead when the top tandem of Wisse Jonker and Javier Renones beat Dustin Werner and Raphael Calzi 6-2. However, Campbell responded through Bastien Huon and Ondrej Labik who beat Ronny Georgi and Vlad Anghel 6-3 on court two. With the doubles point hinging on the result on court three, Austin Allen and Simon Labbe held a slim one-game advantage and were serving. The game came down to the final point before Allen hit the winner, giving the pair a 6-4 victory against Louis Montresso and Gerard Sola.
In singles, ECU used two straight set victories to take a commanding 3-0 lead. First, Jonker topped Calzi 6-2-, 6-2 on court three. His doubles partner, Renones, followed with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Huon on court two.
The lead did not last long though, with Campbell winning the next two matches in quick succession. Georgi fell to Sola 7-5, 6-1 on court four and then Anghel lost to Warner 6-4, 6-3 on the top court.
Two matches remained and both needed a third set to decide a winner. Bissett had an early advantage, winning his first set on court five, while Allen needed to fight back after falling behind after the first set. It was Bissett though who came through in the third set. The Devizes, England product led throughout the third set, but when Labik threatened to come back, cutting the lead to just 5-4, Bissett protected his serve to clinch the 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win.
ECU has one final match in the regular season. The Pirates head to Elon on Saturday afternoon for the regular season finale. Â
