Pirates Fall At Elon In Regular Season Finale

GREENSBORO, N.C. – In the regular season finale, the ECU men's tennis team could not mount a comeback against Elon, falling 4-1 at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.

"Tough one today," said head coach Shawn Heinchon. "We gave ourselves a chance by fighting hard in the singles, but at the end of the day, we just dug ourselves too big of a hole to get out of."

The Pirates fell behind after the doubles point. Ronny Georgi and Vlad Anghel dropped a 6-2 match to Kyle Frankel and Camilo Ponce on court two. The Phoenix clinched the point when Mario Paccini and Felipe Sarrasague beat ECU's Javier Renones and Wisse Jonker 6-3 on the top court.

Elon's lead was extended with a pair of straight set victories. First, Georgi lost to Frankel 6-1, 6-4 on court three. The score moved to 3-0 in favor of Elon when Ponce topped Will Bissett 6-1, 6-2 on court five.

ECU was not totally out of the match though. The Pirates finally got a point when Renones completed a 6-4, 7-5 win over Paccini on court two. The remaining all three singles matches were headed to a third set, with ECU needing all three to complete the comeback.

Unfortunately, the first match of those three to finish went to the Phoenix. Jonker was close to beating Felipe Ossess-Konig, as the second set went to a tiebreaker with Jonker leading by a set. But that tiebreaker went to Osses-Konig who then went on to take the third set for a 4-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-1 victory.

ECU will await its seeding for the American Athletic Conference Championship. The tournament will get started with the first round on Thursday, April 18.
