GREENVILLE, N.C. – Just one road match remains on the schedule for the ECU women's tennis team as the Pirates head north to take on Richmond on Saturday morning.
Â
ECU (19-2) continued its historic winning streak by beating NC Central 7-0 on Wednesday. It was the 19th straight win for ECU, making it the longest Pirates' winning streak since the baseball team won 19 straight in 2004. It was also the 12th time this season that ECU has shut out an opponent.
Â
Alisa Diercksen leads ECU with a 21-8 singles record and has won 13 straight matches. Diercksen's winning streak is only topped by the 14 straight that Celia Ruiz has won, giving the senior a 16-3 overall mark. Nastja Rettich joins Diercksen in breaking the 20-win mark, owning a 20-6 record. Lisa Hofbauer continues to hold court one for the Pirates, going 12-3 there and 15-11 overall. Both Pirate rookies have had successful debut seasons, as Martina Paladini-Jennings is 17-6 while Minette Van Vreden is 15-11.
Â
In doubles, Diercksen and Hofbauer continue to hammer away at their opponents. The pair lost their first three matches of the spring, but since then have won 13 straight by a combined margin of 74-18. Ruiz and Van Vreden have found success on court two, where they are 11-1 and are 12-1 as a pair.
Â
Richmond (7-7) are sitting at .500 for the year, but the Spiders have been much better at home than on the road. Richmond is 4-1 on its home court this year, including recent wins over George Washington and Georgetown. The Spiders most recently lost a tight 4-3 match at Davidson. Kiana Marshall lead Richmond with a 15-5 singles record, including a 10-1 record on court two. Lea Owens is the other Spider with at least 10 singles wins, going 11-7 so far. In doubles, Emily Dunbar and Marshall have held the top court for most of the season and are 10-5 overall. Owens and Dessi Zlateva are second on the team, going 7-4 on court two and 8-5 in total.
Â
First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m., on the Westhampton Courts.
