GREENVILLE, N.C. – The NCAA has honored the ECU women's golf, women's tennis and volleyball teams with Public Recognition Awards for their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) which ranks in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sport, according to an announcement by the organization Wednesday afternoon.
Â
All three teams earned a perfect score of 1,000 for the 2017-18 academic year. The most recent multiyear rates are based on scores from the 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 academic years. Women's lacrosse, softball, men's cross country, men's golf, women's basketball and women's cross country also garnered perfect scores for 2017-18.
Â
The recognition marks the fourth straight and fifth overall for the women's golf team who was cited for its academic achievement following designation after the 2004-05, 2014-15 and 2015-16 academic years. The volleyball and women's tennis programs were also honored for the fifth time since the APR was developed by the NCAA in 2004.
Â
Largely as a result of an increase in perfect scores, teams earning Public Recognition Awards increased to 1,328, up by 44 from the previous academic year. APRs for programs in the top 10% ranged from 987 to a perfect 1,000, and the number of teams posting perfect scores increased to 1,214, marking an increase of 26 teams from last year.
Â
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention as well as graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
Â
APR scores for all Division I teams will be released May 8. The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the ongoing academic performance for each team in every sport. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
