BOONE, N.C. – The East Carolina cross country program turned in a solid effort at its first meet of the season as the women claimed second place and the men third to cap off the Covered Bridge Open hosted by Appalachian State University.
Â
The Pirate women tied with High Point for second, posting a total of 63 points, while Florida State won the team title with a score of 20 points.
Â
Freshman Laura Green was the top performer for ECU as she finished the 5,200-meter course in a time of 18:36.90. Senior Nuria Tillo-Prats was 11th overall with a time of 18:45.81. Senior Mikayla Stoudt and sophomores Abby Yourkavitch and Lindsay Yentz also ended up in the top 20, taking 17th, 19th and 20th respectively.
Â
"I was pleased to see our women pack up the way we did," head coach Josey Weaver said. "This was a great first step for us as we prepare for November. Our top six runners had only a 33-second spread. This is how championship teams race. We have a long way to go and many more challenges ahead to get to where we want to be, but we're on our way."
Â
Freshman Chase Osborne ran well in his first collegiate producing an 8K time of 26:12.32 to end up 12th. Junior Josh Spare, sophomore Ethan Hageman and senior Dean Abushouk also finished in the top 20, snatching 16th, 17th and 18th. East Carolina (90 points) was third in the team race behind Florida State (28 points) and Appalachian State (49 points).
Â
"I thought today was a great learning experience for our men," Weaver stated. "This team is young and we will grow from this today. We will have to continue to learn from each race to be where we want to be come November. The effort from the men was there today. Now it's just about learning how to race."
