DURHAM, N.C. – Seniors Blake Taylor and Patrick Stephenson shot 2-under-par and 1-under-par, respectively, helping East Carolina to an eighth-place finish at the 2019 Rod Myers Invitational at the Duke Golf Club on Sunday.
Asa team, the Pirates finished with an 18-over-par 882 (301-282-299). Taylor (72-67-75=214) finished alone in 12th-place and Stephenson (75-68-72=215) was part of a five-way tie for 13th.
Taylor stood 5-under-par through 36 holes and entered the final round in sixth-place, but carded a 3-over-par 75 Sunday to fall out of the top 10.
Stephenson climbed seven spots Sunday moving up from 20th with a final round score of par-72. He stood 3-over-par through 11 holes in round three, but made three birdies and four pars on the final seven holes to earn a top 15 finish.
Sophomore A.J. Beechler finished 49th overall with an 11-over-par 227 (80-70-77) with classmate Attie Giles finishing two strokes behind him at 13-over-par 229 (77-77-75).
Freshman Chris Sperrazza fired a 17-over-par 233 (77-78-78=233) in his collegiate debut.
"We struggled to get started each round and starting on 10 is a difficult stretch to play," ECU Head Coach Andrew Sapp said. "I'm proud of how we finished our last nine holes today after a bad start. However, we had one great round and too bad ones so we need to gain more consistency going forward.
"We will see a lot of these same teams next week in Winston-Salem so we need to show improvement there."
Wake Forest won the team title with a 22-under-par (283-278-281=842), three strokes ahead of second-place Duke (281-274-290=845). UNCG's Jonathan Brightwell captured medalist honors at 11-under-par 205 (68-70-67).
The Pirates will next play in the Old Town Club Invitational on September 23-24.
