GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina redshirt junior libero Brandee Markwith has been named the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career according to an announcement by the league Monday afternoon.
Â
Markwith anchored the Pirates to a huge 4-0 week that included a road win at NC State and three home victories that clinched the Pirate Invitational title. She averaged 5.44 digs per set and committed just three reception errors in 71 chances.
Â
In Tuesday's come-from-behind win against the Wolfpack, Markwith recorded a season-best 32 digs as ECU overcame a two sets to none deficit to down NC State for the first time since 2007. It is the highest single-match dig total among AAC players this season. Â
Â
Markwith continued her stellar week with a 12-dig performance in the Pirates' sweep of George Washington and followed that up with 17 more digs in a 3-0 victory over Norfolk State. She posted 26 digs in the tournament finale – a five-set win over USC Upstate.
Â
After missing the entire 2018 campaign due to injury, Markwith has settled in and leads the team with 160 total digs (4.57 per set). She also ranks sixth in the conference in digs per set. Additionally, Markwith is sixth in program history with 1,224 career digs.
