GREENSBORO, N.C. – Diogo Marques continued his undefeated start to the season for the ECU men's tennis team as the Pirates racked up a 22-9 singles record at the UNCG Fall Invitational.

"First, I would just like to compliment UNCG on putting together such a great fall tournament," said head coach Shawn Heinchon. "Perfect weekend for us, this is just what we needed. I wish all of our fall events could be this well done. We got a ton of matches in against teams that we typically play year in and year out, which really helps us see where we are compared to them at this point in the year and more importantly, helps us see what we need to work on. Overall, I thought our singles were very solid, especially at the top spots, but we do need to get our double up to our usual standards if we are going to be any good come this spring."

The tournament at Greensboro was structured as hidden dual matches and the top three players for ECU were nearly unbeatable. Marques went 4-0 for the second straight weekend, beating opponents from USC Upstate, UNCG, Radford and James Madison. The sophomore from Setubal, Portugal is now 8-0 this fall.

Javier Renones made his fall debut and went 3-1 while Agustin Tamagnone had a 3-1 mark for the second straight week. Wisse Jonker and Daniel Bird both competed for the first time in the fall and each went 2-2. Nelson Stafford also had a strong weekend on the singles court, winning all three of his matches.

In doubles, the Pirates finished with a 7-4 mark. Jonker and Tamagnone partnered together for the first time and went 2-1 as did Bird and Stafford. After going 2-1 together last weekend, Simon Labbe and Federico Masetti won another match as a duo and now lead ECU with a 3-1 doubles ledger so far.

ECU will have a few weeks off from competition before heading to the Richmond Fall Tournament. The Pirates will start play at Richmond on Friday, October 11.
