RICHMOND, Va. – A pair of players won the consolation half of their draw as the ECU men's tennis team finished up play at River City Tennis Open hosted by Richmond.

"Our results were all over the place this weekend and if I had to come up with one word to describe the tournament for us I would say humbling," said head coach Shawn Heinchon. "Overall, we played a little better in doubles then we did in singles. Our singles was just too inconsistent for some of our guys. The thing I like most about going to a fall tournament or any competition for that matter, is it hands you on a silver platter what you need to work on. This does not always show up in practice or just competing against our own guys, so for that aspect these events are perfect and exactly what we need."

ECU struggled in the opening match of the singles draw, as six of the seven Pirate players lost their first match. However, Agustin Tamagnone, Simon Labbe and Federico Masetti all bounced back to reach their respective consolation finals. Labbe and Masetti each won their final match, with Labbe defeating Richmond's Nick Mueller and Masetti topping Richmond's Josh Keitelman. Labbe and Masetti each finished with 3-1 singles marks to lead the Pirates. Tamagnone fell in the consolation final, but still finished the weekend with a 2-2 ledger.

The Pirates' performance in doubles was better than their singles play. Wisse Jonker and Javier Renones went 2-1 together, finishing in third-place after closing the weekend with a victory over Campbell's Fernando Clemente and Ondrej Labik. Also finishing 2-1 was the duo of Tamagnone and Nelson Stafford. The pair won their first two matches before falling to App State's Alessio Azzalini and Campbell Stone in the draw final.

The Pirates close out their fall season with the ITA Carolina Regionals. The regional championships will get started on Friday, Oct. 18 in Cary, N.C.
