Pirates Prepare For ITA Carolina Regional
October 17, 2019 | Men's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – With a chance to extend the fall season, the ECU men's tennis will head to the ITA Carolina Regional Championships this weekend.
Â
"The ITA Regionals is made up of the best players in our region and for sure would be a tough test for us," said head coach Shawn Heinchon. "Our guys love this event and it should be a great way for us to end the competition part of what we have left for the fall."
Â
ECU will have four players competing in the singles draw at the regional championships. Javier Renones and Wisse Jonker are the two most experienced players on the ECU roster, but have gotten off to slow starts this season. Renones is just 4-4 after leading the team with a 21-8 mark last season. Jonker is 3-5 after he went 19-13 during the 2018-19 campaign.
Â
Joining Renones and Jonker will be Simon Labbe and Agustin Tamagnone. Tamagnone is second on the team, trailing only Diogo Marques, with an 8-4 singles ledger. Labbe is now 7-5 in singles this fall after winning three of his four matches at the Richmond Invite last weekend.
Â
Over the past two seasons, Jonker and Renones have formed one of ECU's top doubles duos and are 2-1 when playing together this fall. In total, Jonker and Renones are 29-9 as a pairing. Labbe and Tamagnone will be playing together for the first time this fall.
Â
The Carolina Regional Championships is one of 12 regional championships sponsored by the ITA. Student-athletes will be competing for a spot in the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships with the doubles champions as well as the singles champion and finalist earning an bid. Â
Â
Play will get started on Friday, Oct. 18 and run through Monday, Oct. 21 in Cary, N.C., at the Cary Tennis Park.
