WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- East Carolina senior Blake Taylor posted an 11-under-par 199 (63-67-69) en route to a third-place finish at the second annual Old Town Club Collegiate, hosted by Wake Forest University.
Taylor joins Harold Varner as the only two players in school history to post a score of less than 200 during a 54-hole tournament. Varner carded a 196 at the 2010 OBX Intercollegiate held in Powell Point, N.C.
He opened the tournament with a school record 63 in round one, breaking the previous mark of 64 held by three former Pirates. Taylor began from the No. 10 tee and quickly moved to 4-under-par after seven holes. He parred then next four holes before sinking birdie putts on holes four and to move to 6-under-par. A bogey on six was his lone hiccup of the round as he birdied the next two holes before paring nine to end the round in first-place by a stroke.
Taylor shot 4-under-par 67 in round two and was only one stroke out of first-place entering Tuesday's final round. However Wake Forest's Noah Woolsey equaled Taylor's first round score and surged by four other golfers, including Taylor, to win medalist honors at 15-under-par 195 (66-66-63).
As a team, ECU finished in sixth-place matching its 2018 Old Town Club Collegiate score of 5-under-par 835 (271-281-283). No. 8 Washington took home the team title at 30-under-par 810, followed by No. 1 Wake Forest in second-place (-21). Seventh-ranked Louisville and No. 17 West Virginia tied for third at 12-under-par with No. 13 Penn State rounding out the top-5 at 6-under-par 834.
ECU senior Patrick Stephenson (73-70-71) and sophomore A.J. Beechler (68-74-72) each carded a 4-over-par 214 and tied for 46th. Sophomore Attie Giles finished one stroke behind his Pirate teammates at 5-over-par 215 (74-70-71), while junior Stephen Carroll shot 12-over-par 222 (67-79-76).
The Pirates return to action Oct. 11-13 at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Blackthorn Golf Club in Johnson City, Tenn.
