
Morris Announces The Signing Of Sophie Zehender

GREENVILLE, N.C. – On the eve of the 2020 spring season, the ECU women's tennis team has signed Sophie Zehender for the 2020-21 campaign, as announced by head coach Tom Morris on Wednesday.

"We are extremely excited to welcome Sophie Zehender to our program next year," Morris said. "She has a very  good  UTR rating currently at 10.08 , has international experience, and is a very solid player in every aspect of her game. There are no apparent weaknesses in Sophie's play. Her forehand, backhand, serves, volleys are all very solid. Sophie is a great recruit for our program, and we look forward to continued improvement with her a part our team!"   Â

Zehender, a native of Stuttgart, comes to ECU after rising up the youth ranks in Germany. She had a busy 2019, reaching at least the semifinals of three national tournaments as well as the finals of a pair of regional tournaments. Zehender finished as the champion of the RVR Cup as well as reaching the semifinals of both the Ladies Open and the Dimah Open, all three of which are national tournaments in Germany. She claimed the Second District Championship and finished in second place at the Baden-Württembergische Championship as well. Throughout the years, Zehender has also participated in both the youth and women's German Championships. Â

ECU will open the 2020 campaign on Monday, Jan. 20 when the Pirates travel to take on NC State.
