GREENVILLE, N.C. – After starting the season with a pair of home wins, the ECU men's tennis team will try to stay perfect as the Pirates host Navy and Winthrop this weekend at the ECU Indoor Tennis Center.
Â
"Another exciting weekend coming up for us, we always seem to have close matches with both Navy and Winthrop," said head coach Shawn Heinchon. "All of us have some new faces on our teams this year so we will get some new match-ups but for the most part, all of us know each other pretty well. No question, we are going to need to play well if we are going to get through either one of them. Go Pirates."
Â
ECU (2-0) started its season with a pair of wins for the fifth straight season. The Pirates just dropped a single point, beating NC Central 7-0 and UNC Asheville 6-1. Diogo Marques won both of his singles matches on the top court and is now 10-0 on the season. Simon Labbe (12-7) and Agustin Tamagnone (11-5) each won a singles match and are now first and second, respectively, on the team in singles victories. Javier Renones and Wisse Jonker each got their dual match seasons started on the right foot, going 2-0 last weekend and are both now 6-6. Federico Masetti and Nelson Stafford both got their first collegiate dual match wins as well. In doubles, Tamagnone and Labbe are now 4-1 after a win on court one. Marques and Masetti also played together and went 2-0 last weekend. Â
Â
Navy (2-2) has split its opening four matches, beating St. Bonaventure and Mount St. Mary's (Md.) at home while falling to Dartmouth and Penn on the road. Conners O'Brien leads the team with a 13-3 singles record and has won seven straight matches while Matthew Lee and Finn Garner are both 10-5. Greg Durham, Gavin Segraves and Andrew Ton have all played matches on court one. Durham and Segraves are 1-0 on the top court while Ton is 0-2. Ton and Derrick Thompons are the top doubles pair for the Midshipmen, going 8-3 overall and 1-1 on court one. Durham and Jack Dabek are 7-3 as a duo as well while Garner and Reilly Wilson are a perfect 5-0 together. The two teams will be meeting for the seventh straight season and eighth time overall. The Pirates are 5-2 against the Midshipmen and have won three straight in the series. Last year, ECU won 5-2 in Annapolis, with Marques, Jonker and Renones all getting singles victories. The Pirates are 2-0 when hosting Navy.
Â
Winthrop (0-3) has dropped a pair of tight losses to start its season. The Eagles fell 4-3 at both Davidson and Queens University before losing 6-1 at Furman. Abhi Vannemreddy has been the bright spot for Winthrop, going 3-0 on court one to start the season. He scored the only point for the Eagles at Furman, winning in a third-set tiebreaker. Miha Velicki is the only other Eagle with a singles win in a dual match, going 1-2 so far. Lluis Miralles and Velicki have been the top doubles pairing, going 1-1 in dual matches. Vannemreddy and James Hartson have both partnered together and are 1-1 on court two. The two teams last met during the 2017-18 campaign with ECU winning 5-2 at home. Jonker and Renones both won on the singles court that day.
Â
First serve for the match against Navy is scheduled for 2:30 p.m., on Friday afternoon. The Pirates will take on Winthrop starting at noon on Sunday. Both matches will be in the ECU Indoor Tennis Center and admission is free for all fans.
