February 14, 2020 | Men's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The strong start to the season continued as the ECU men's tennis team beat Hampton 7-0 on Friday afternoon in the ECU Indoor Tennis Center.
"Today was good for us," said head coach Shawn Heinchon. "IT was very business-like which as coaches is always good to see. I don't think we played very well in the start of some of our doubles, but once we got to settle in, the guys did a great job of staying committed to their work."
ECU improves to 7-1 on the year while Hampton is 0-4.
The Pirates had to dig deep to get the the doubles point. Diogo Marques and Federico Masetti looked like they would romp to an easy win on court two. However, Davy Vangeerke and Fernando Fernandes cut a 5-2 ECU lead to just 5-4. With the Pirates serving with a chance to win the match, Marques and Masetti came through to get one doubles win. Renones and Jonker were neck and neck with Cliff Dwyer and Matthew Forster-Estwick on court one. The experienced ECU pairing finally created some separation with a break point late in the match and pulled off a 6-4 win to clinch the doubles point.
After a tight doubles point, the singles were where ECU showed its dominance, cruising to wins on almost every court. Marques was first to finish his match, beating Fernandes 6-1, 5-0 with the Hampton player retiring. Renones beat Fayzullokhan Malyvud 6-1, 6-3 on court three to put ECU up 3-0 and then his doubles partner, Jonker, topped Dwyer 6-1, 6-4 on court four to clinch the Pirate win.
The most exciting match of the day came on court two. Agustin Tamagnone and Foster-Estwick each won a tiebreaker. Foster-Estwick took the first set in a tiebreaker and then Tamagnone answered with a second-set tiebreaker win. The match went to a third set tiebreaker where Tamagnone won to close out the match 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-4), 1-0 (10-5)
The final two matches were again lopsided. Masetti did not drop a single game against Daud Gantt-Bey on court five, winning 6-0, 6-0. Nelson Stafford finished out the day with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Basil Post on court six.
