ECU Heads To The American Championships In Houston

East Carolina will compete in the 2020 American Athletic Conference Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships Wednesday – Saturday , Feb. 19-22, at the CRWC Natatorium in Houston.

A total of 42 event champions will be crowned during the four-day meet, which will air on the American Digital Network, with preliminary events beginning on Wednesday at 12 p.m. ET at the CRWC Natatorium.

ECU will be looking for its fourth men's title in six years and first since 2017 after finishing runner-up behind Cincinnati each of the last two seasons, while the ladies are in search of their first American conference championship.

Senior Gustavo Santos looks to become just the third American student-athlete to sweep a championship event in four straight seasons after winning the men's 100 butterfly for the third consecutive year with a meet record time of :46.01 in 2019. Santos, who added wins in the event in both 2017 (:47.07) and 2018 (:46.82), would become just the third athlete as four-time American individual champions in a single discipline and distance.

Junior Jacek Arentewicz has swept the men's 100 and 200 breaststroke two years running, including a championship record time of 52.64 in the 100 breaststroke in 2019. Arentewicz ranks third in the 100 and 200 breaststroke in the conference this season entering the championship meet.

Sophomore Marek Osina holds the top spot in the conference this season in the 200 IM (1:46.14) and second-fastest in the 200 backstroke (1:45.58).Â

On the women's side, senior Catherine Johnson owns the third-fastest time in the league in the 50 (22.99) and 100 (49.75) freestyle. A year ago, she captured the bronze medal in the 100 freestyle.

Kristen Stege (500 freestyle), Shannon Stott (200 butterfly), Adela Vavrinova (400 IM) and Lily West (200 breaststroke) each rank among the top 3 in a variety of events in the conference as the championship meet prepares to commence.Â
