ECU Survives Battle With Georgia Southern
February 23, 2020 | Men's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – In the first outdoor home match of the year, the ECU men's tennis team held on to beat Georgia Southern 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at River Birch Tennis Complex.
Â
"Wow, what a great battle today," said head coach Shawn Heinchon. "We played great in doubles, but then the fun was over. Georgia Southern did an unbelievable job of hanging in there. They played some great singles and there was a point during the match that I didn't think things were going to go our way. But one thing is for sure, we have a bunch of competitive hombres and that can take you a long way. Congrats to Agustin (Tamagnone) on the clincher, a gutsy performance by him."
Â
ECU improves to 9-2 while Georgia Southern is now 8-8.
Â
ECU got a good start as the Pirates won the doubles point. Agustin Tamagnone and Simon Labbe had not gotten a win over the past two matches, but they bounced back with a 6-1 win over Murphy McCollough and Santiago Suarez on court one. ECU clinched the point thanks to a 6-3 win by Federico Masetti and Diogo Marques on court three. ECU is now 9-0 this season when winning the doubles point.
Â
A pair of singles matches ended quickly. Georgia Southern struck first when Pascal Wagemaker beat Labbe 6-1, 6-1. ECU got a win of its own when Marques topped Finkelstein 6-1, 6-3 on court one.
Â
From there, the two teams battled back and forth. Georgia Southern tied the match through McCollough, who win a first-set tiebreaker and went on to beat Javier Renones 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 on court two.
Â
Like Friday's match against Bryant, ECU needed at least two wins on the final three courts. The Pirates got their first when Masetti won both tiebreakers in a 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-4) win over Jonathan Morales on court six.
Â
The last two matches needed three sets. On court four, Tamagnone won his opening set against Alexandros Roumpis, but dropped the second set. Wisse Jonker dropped his first set, but responded to win the second. It was Tamagnone who got the clinching point for the Pirates. The junior was neck and neck with Roumpis in the third set before finally getting a break point to clinch a 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 victory.
Â
The Pirates will be back home next Sunday for a matchup with Coastal Carolina. That match is scheduled for 12 noon at the River Birch Tennis Complex.
