GREENVILLE, N.C. – After a perfect start at home, the ECU men's tennis team will take its first road trip of the season as the Pirates head north to take on St. John's, Hofstra and the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
Â
"Exciting weekend ahead of us, playing in great locations against great teams we have not played before," said head coach Shawn Heinchon. "Fortune to have this opportunity as our first road trip of our spring. We can't wait "
Â
ECU (4-0) beat Navy (4-3) and Winthrop (7-0) last weekend to continue its undefeated start to the season. The Pirates have been dominant in singles play since the calendar turned to 2020, going 20-4 so far. Diogo Marques lost his first match of the season against the Midshipmen, but bounced back to win a three-set thriller against Winthrop and is now 11-1 on the season. Simon Labbe also won a three-set match against the Eagles and is now a team-best 14-7 this year. Agustin Tamagnone is yet to lose a singles match this spring, going 3-0 on court four and is up to 13-5 overall. Federico Masetti also bounced back from a loss against Navy with a win against Winthrop and is now 10-5. Javier Renones has been a rock on court two, going 3-0 there to start his senior season. In doubles, Labbe and Tamagnone are the top doubles pairing for ECU, going 3-0 on the top court and are 6-1 in total. Renones and Wisse Jonker are 4-3, winning a match on both courts one and two while Marques and Masetti are a perfect 3-0 together.
Â
St. John's (7-1) has had a nearly perfect start to its season, with its only loss coming at No. 25 Arizona. ECU will be the second AAC opponent that St. John's face this season, with the Red Storm already beating UConn 4-0. Aditya Vashistha has the highest ranking of any St. John's player, checking in at No. 44 in the ITA singles ranking, but is fourth on the team with an 11-3 singles mark. Udayan Bhakar (16-2), Charlies James (15-2) and Giuseppe De Camelis (12-3) all have already reached double-figures in singles wins. Vashistha, Bhakar and Ignacio Garcia (9-5) are all 2-0 on court one. In doubles, Garcia and James are 7-2 while Bhakar and Vashistha are 6-1. Garcia and Ognjen Trejgut are 4-0 on court one this spring.
Â
Hofstra (2-1) has played just one dual match this spring, beating Fairleigh Dickinson 4-3. Jun Sasagawa leads the team with an 9-3 singles record and is 3-0 on court two. Shawn Jackson has played a pair of matches on court one for the Pride, going 1-2. In doubles, Sasagawa and Giacomo Pezzoli are 6-3 together, including 1-1 on court one. However, Sasagawa paired with Alvaro Arce Lopez-Sanchez on court one against Farleigh Dickinson. Jackson and Ostap Kovalenko are 3-0 together on court two.
Â
The New Jersey Institute of Technology (0-2) has started its dual match season with losses to Morgan State and Binghamton.
