GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina takes its first midweek test of the season Wednesday afternoon, traveling across the state for a meeting with Charlotte. The non-conference contest is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Sue M. Daughtridge Stadium.
The Pirates won three of four last weekend at the Battle of the Beach at Coastal Carolina, defeating Buffalo and Saint Francis while splitting a Sunday doubleheader with the host Chanticleers to improve to 5-1 overall for the young season.
Junior RHP Kama Woodall fashioned a 2-0 record and 1.62 ERA while tossing two complete games during the event. She also held opposing hitters to a .217 batting average. Woodall is ranked second in the American Athletic Conference and 14th nationally in victories (3). So far in 2021, she is 3-0 with a 1.56 ERA and seven strikeouts in 18 innings of work.
Senior outfielder Olivia Narron also put in a nice effort in Conway, hitting .385 (5-for-13) with six runs scored and a double. She tallied three hits and scored a run in the 9-4 victory over Buffalo in addition to playing error-free defense in center field. Narron is tops in the AAC in sacrifice bunts (3), runs scored (10) and triples (1) while also slotting in the top 20 nationally in sac bunts per game (0.50/ninth), runs scored per game (1.67/19th) and triples (1/20th).
Redshirt senior infielder Rachel McCollum made her season debut over the weekend and hit .364 with two runs scored and six RBI. She is fifth among active NCAA players in career home runs (55).
As a team, East Carolina is hitting .329 with six doubles, one triple, six home runs, a .488 slugging percentage and .407 on base percentage. The Pirates paced the American Conference in sacrifice bunts (6) and fielding double plays (3) and are 20th nationally in runs scored per game (7.33) as well as 24th in batting average.
Narron is one of seven ECU players hitting at least .316. She leads the Pirates with a .500 batting average from the leadoff position in the lineup. Sophomore infielder Bailey Ledvina has clubbed a team-best four home runs after entering the season with none to her credit.
A Look At Charlotte
Charlotte is 3-4 early on in the 2021 campaign with wins over Appalachian State (twice) and Georgia Southern. The 49ers trekked down to Gainesville last weekend for the Bubly Invitational at the University of Florida's Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium where the split two games with Georgia Southern and fell twice to the then No. 6 Gators.
Charlotte is batting .271 as a squad led by Cori Henderson's .400 average. The 49ers have tallied 16 doubles and two home runs and have stolen eight bases in nine attempts. Charlotte also sports a .926 fielding percentage, having committed 15 errors in 204 defensive chances.
In the circle, Lindsey Walljasper leads the 49er staff with a 2.80 earned run average, 2-1 record and three complete games in 25 innings of work. She has struck out nine opposing batters against eight walks. As a unit, Charlotte owns a 4.85 ERA with 19 strikeouts and 24 walks in 47.2 innings. 49er foes are hitting .299 with 14 doubles, four triples and six home runs.
