GREENVILLE, N.C. – On the heels of an impressive performance that resulted in a four-shot win at the River Landing Classic, the East Carolina women's golf team is set to participate in the 2021 Briar's Creek Invitational, which begins on Monday, March 15. The two-day, 54-hole event will be played at the par-72, 6,110-yard Golf Club at Briar's Creek in Johns Island, S.C.
Â
The Pirates (17-6) claimed their 33rd team title in program history on Tuesday, March 9, which was the second under second-year head coach CC Buford. ECU's starting five all recorded Top 21 placements or better including junior Julie Boysen Hillestad, who finished third with a career-best collegiate score of 207 (9-under) – the second-lowest 54-hole total in the Pirate annuals. Her 36-hole score of 134 (65-69) was a new River Landing Classic mark while the seven-under par opening round of 65 tied three other golfers, including fellow teammate Dorthea Forbrigd for the lowest round at ECU.
Â
No. 58 ECU will be joined in the 18-team field by Boston College, (67) Campbell, College of Charleston, (38) Illinois, Indiana, (49) Kansas, (14) Maryland, (18) Miami (Fla.), (34) Michigan, (40) Michigan State, Minnesota, (52) North Carolina, NC State, (63) Ohio State, (44) Old Dominion, (61) Penn State and (25) UCF.
Â
Bufford will use a lineup consisting of Hillestad, Oda Sofie Kilsti (sophomore), Michelle Forsland (senior) and 2019 All-American Athletic Conference honorees Forbrigd (senior) and Kathry Carson (senior).
Â
Carson will carry the honorary Major Mikeal Murray bag for this event. The Pirates are participating in the Folds of Honor Tribute Program where the players rotate in carrying the bag from tournament to tournament. Once the golf season ends, the bag will be auctioned off and all proceeds will go towards Folds of Honor scholarships.
Â
The tournament begins with 36 holes Monday (9 a.m. EDT) followed by 18 holes on Tuesday at 8 a.m. Pirate fans can get updated scoring throughout the event by logging on to www.GolfStat.com.
