GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina closes the bulk of its non-league slate this weekend, facing off against (RV) JMU in a three-game series at Veterans Memorial Park.
Â
Due to the threat of inclement weather Friday, the clubs will begin the set with a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. before wrapping things up with a single contest Sunday at 1 p.m.
Â
The Pirates (9-10) have lost eight-straight games, but five have been by just one run. ECU also took No. 18 Georgia to the ninth inning in Athens last Saturday before a walk-off grand slam allowed the Bulldogs to escape the upset bid. In the midst of an 18-game road swing, East Carolina has played just three games at home in 2021 - a three-game sweep of Ohio.
Â
Redshirt senior infielder Rachel McCollum paces the Pirates in batting average (.442) and hits (23) while entering the series with 56 career home runs. Junior RHP Kama Woodall has been the stalwart of the pitching staff, tossing a team-high 70.2 innings while compiling a 4-5 record and 2.87 ERA with 45 strikeouts against 26 walks.
Â
As a unit ECU is batting .299 with 18 doubles, a triple and 16 home runs. The pitching staff sports a collective 3.22 ERA with 100 strikeouts against 58 walks in 128.1 innings. The Pirates lead the American Athletic Conference in fielding percentage (.974), sacrifice flies (8), sacrifice bunts (13), assists (141) and fielding double plays (10). Â Â Â
Â
A Look At JMU
JMU is off to a very solid start to its 2021 campaign, winning each of its first six games by a combined score of 55-8. The Dukes are hitting .358 as a team with seven doubles, two triples and 17 home runs. The pitching staff has been just as impressive, compiling a 1.29 earned run average with 57 strikeouts against 16 walks in 38 innings. JMU enters the weekend after sweeping a doubleheader from Rhode Island March 14, out-scoring the Rams 31-1 in the two contests. Freshman Alissa Humphrey tossed a no hitter in the second game and the Dukes scored a program single-game record 20 runs in the shutout.
Â
The JMU Series
East Carolina leads the series with JMU 7-6. The Pirates have captured two of the last three encounters, but dropped the most recent meeting 3-1 back on Feb. 24, 2019 in Greenville. ECU is 3-0 against the Dukes in Harrisonburg.
