ECU Resumes Rivalry With UNCW Wednesday

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The 102nd meeting between East Carolina and UNCW on the softball diamond takes place Wednesday afternoon when the Pirates host the Seahawks in a non-conference contest inside Max R. Joyner Family Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. and the game will stream live via ESPN with Evan Budrovich and Julia Alsbrook on the call.

ECU (16-11) has rounded into form as of late, currently riding a five-game winning streak that has included four shutouts. The Pirates have also emerged victorious in eight of their last nine outings.

East Carolina secured its first three road victories of the season last weekend, sweeping a non-conference series at the College of Charleston. The Pirates scored five runs in the top of the seventh to rally for a 5-4 win in the opener Saturday before sweeping a doubleheader Sunday by identical 5-0 scores.

Madisyn Davis was named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll for her efforts in games against Elon and the College of Charleston. She went 2-0 with a spotless 0.00 earned run average in 13 innings of work, tossing a complete-game shutout against the Phoenix and working six scoreless frame versus the Cougars.

ECU ranks third in the AAC in both batting average (.285) and earned run average (3.48). The Pirates also slot third in on base percentage (.371), doubles (42). triples (7) and stolen bases (46). Individually, Davis is second in earned run average (1.84). sixth in opposing batting average (.232) and eighth in strikeouts (40).

East Carolina is 80-21 versus the Seahawks, including a 36-8 mark at home. The teams last met April 7, 2021 in Wilmington where UNCW captured a 1-0 victory.

The Competition
UNCW has soared to a 17-4 overall record in 2022 and has won seven of its last eight games. The Seahawks' last outing March 15 resulted in a 2-0 setback to North Carolina in Chapel Hill. UNCW has been especially good in the circle where the team's 1.74 ERA ranks 17th nationally. Tayler Vittola paces the Seahawk offensive attack with a .406 batting average while she also leads the squad with 21 runs scored. Emily Winstead has thrown a team-high 45.0 innings, owning a 5-2 record and 1.71 ERA with 60 strikeouts against 17 walks.

East Carolina travels to Memphis this weekend, opening American Athletic Conference play with a three-game series at the Tigers Softball Complex.
