WILMINGTON, N.C. – East Carolina kicks off the 2023 season and the second year of the Shane Winkler era this weekend when the Pirates travel to UNC Wilmington for the UNCW Tournament Feb. 9-11. ECU will face a top-25 opponent in No. 11 Virginia Tech and will also go up against Purdue Fort Wayne before concluding the tournament with a single game against the host Seahawks.

Last year, the Pirates compiled an overall record of 20-36 while recorded a 2-16 mark in American Athletic Conference play. ECU hosted the AAC Softball Tournament last season for the second time since joining the conference but fell in the first round to South Florida 8-0 in six innings of play.

Winkler retains 16 players from last year's roster including 12 position players, led by outfielder Taudrea Sinnie who was named All-AAC Second Team after hitting .283 at the plate and posting a fielding percentage of .986 in 52 games played. Jocelyn Alonso is the team's leading returner in terms of batting average at .348.

The Pirates return four pitchers including Madisyn Davis who led the team with a 3.45 ERA and All-AAC Rookie Team member Jordan Hatch.

The UNC Wilmington Series
The Pirates and Seahawks have a storied history as the Pirates lead the series 19-10 but UNCW took the last meeting 8-7 on Mar. 23, 2022, in Greenville.

The Virginia Tech Series
East Carolina is 3-5 against Virginia Tech with the last meeting between the two schools coming on Feb. 8, 2020, a 4-2 Hokies win.

The Purdue Fort Wayne Series
The Pirates have met the Mastodons once as ECU defeated Purdue Fort Wayne 5-1 back on Mar. 13, 2016.
