TAMPA, Fla. – The East Carolina softball team is set to face off with South Florida in the opening round of the American Athletic Conference Softball Championship on Thursday at 5 p.m. inside USF Softball Stadium.

The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Ryan Urquhart and Francesca Enea on the call. The Pirates are coming off a tough final weekend of the regular season at home where they were swept by Tulsa by a combined score of 17-3 in the three contests.

ECU is seeking a second all-time appearance in the semifinal round of the American tournament after advancing at the 2019 conference championship before the remainder of the weekend was cancelled due to inclement weather.

Taylor Edwards leads the Pirates on offense with a batting average of .373 (8th in AAC), has a team-high 25 RBI and has recorded multiple hits in 12 games. Taudrea Sinnie is tied for second in the American in stolen bases with 17 and has hit six triples (4th in AAC) and Logan Sutton leads the team in home runs with six. The Pirates are led in the circle by the one-two punch of Addy Bullis (2.93 ERA, 94 K) and Jordan Hatch (3.63 ERA, 110 K).

Scouting the Bulls
South Florida is coming off a dominant 8-0 win at Houston and the Bulls have won four of their last five. Marissa Trivelpiece leads South Florida at the plate with a .302 batting average and is tied for the team lead in home runs (8) with Vivian Ponn. The Bulls' pitching staff is one of the stingiest in the league with an overall ERA of 2.73 (2nd in AAC) led by Payton Dixon (1.43 ERA, 75 K) and Gabriella Nori (2.18 ERA, 90 K).

The Pirates faced South Florida in last year's AAC Championship as the tournament host but were shutout 8-0 in six innings. South Florida swept East Carolina earlier this season in the conference opener for both teams including another run-rule win. The Pirates have dropped their last seven against the Bulls and the last time ECU defeated South Florida was a 1-0 win in eight innings on the road on May 2, 2021.
