GREENVILLE, N.C. – The third seeded East Carolina soccer team is set to compete in the American Athletic Conference Championship Game against top-seeded and nationally ranked No. 19 Memphis on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Lakewood Ranch, Fla. The game will be available for streaming on ESPNU/ESPN+.
The contest is the first conference championship game appearance for the Pirates since 2008 when they also faced Memphis in the CUSA title game.
Last Time Out
The Pirates got a goal from Sydney Schnell with 6:24 remaining in the game to force overtime against South Florida before Maeve English made a few crucial saves in the extra sessions to force the game into penalty kicks. After both teams converted their first two attempts and the Pirates converted their third, English got a stop to Gentiana Fatej's strike and the Pirates were able to convert their final two PKs for the victory with Juliana Viera notching the winning score.
Scouting Memphis
The Tigers have once more been the class of the American in 2024. With a 13-1-4 record, they will be looking four a fourth-consecutive American Athletic Conference Championship on Sunday and will be doing so with an ever potent offense. With five games of three-or-more goals, the Tigers are led in scoring by Ashley Henderson's nine goals and three assists and Ai Kitagawa with six goals and six assists. Eight players have scored multiple goals on the year and they've been stout defensively on the year, too, with just 12 goals allowed. Kaylie Bierman has gotten most of the run in goal with eight shutouts and a .732 save percentage.
Series History
The Pirates and Tigers met in a thriller earlier this season with Caitlen-Star Dolan Boodram scoring a stunner from distance late in the second half to steal a draw and end Memphis' national leading 17-game home winning streak. Overall, the Pirates have not defeated the Tigers since a home victory in 2021 and Memphis controls the all-time series 19-3-4.
Records Broken
Annabelle Abbott and Maeve English have both broken the program record for career appearances now with 86, besting Kim Sanford's 84 from 2017-2021. Against Charlotte on Monday, English also passed Amber Campbell for the most career goalkeeper minutes in program history now standing at 7,889. The previous record was 7,690.Â
Iron Woman
Abby Sowa has played in every game and not come off for a second since Oct. 17, 2021. That's two full seasons and 60 full games.Â
