February 18, 2024 | Softball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina softball team split its two games falling to Longwood 5-2 before rebounding to defeat the Lancers 6-0 on the final day of the Pirate Clash at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium on Sunday.
Â
Game One: Longwood 5, East Carolina 2
ECU entered its first game with Longwood on fire at the plate, tallying 21 runs in its past two games, but the Pirates' bats went cold and Longwood took advantage of some miscues to hand ECU its first loss of the season.
Â
After a two RBI double in the top of the third, Longwood extended its lead to 5-0 after three Pirate errors in the inning. ECU would attempt to rally in the bottom of the sixth after Morgan Johnson's double and a Longwood error scored two runs, but the next two batters would strikeout to end the inning.
Â
ECU would have one last chance to extend the game with runners on second and third but a fly ball to center field would give the Pirates their first loss.
Â
Jordan Hatch (5-1) gave up five hits and two earned runs in the loss while Maggie Chapin (3-3) tossed nine strikeouts.
Â
Game Two: East Carolina 6, Longwood 0
East Carolina would rebound from its first loss as the Pirates jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on the Lancers in the bottom of the third after Kanisha Anderson scored on a wild pitch and Johnson hit her fourth home run of the weekend.
Â
ECU would add on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth on a two RBI single from Emma Jackson to extend its lead to 6-0. The Lancers would get runners in scoring position for the next three innings, but the Pirates would keep Longwood of the scoreboard to close out the Pirate Clash with a win.
Â
Addy Bullis (3-0) tossed five strikeouts and only gave up three hits for the win.
Â
Up Next
The Pirates will remain at home next weekend for the Pirate Invitational as they take on Towson at 3 p.m. and N.C. Central at 5:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
