Charleston, S.C. – The East Carolina softball team is set to begin its third season under head coach Shane Winkler on Thursday, Feb. 8 when the Pirates visit the CSU Softball Complex to take on Charleston Southern. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.Â
Â
Thursday night will mark Winkler's return to Charleston Southern where he previously coached for a decade (2009-18), tallying a program-record 261 wins and a first-ever NCAA Tournament berth in 2014. With a win on Thursday, Winkler will reach the 400 mark in career victories as a head coach.
Â
Following Thursday night's clash with the Buccaneers, ECU will stay in the Palmetto State for the weekend to compete in the Charleston Invitational Feb. 9-11. Joining the Pirates and host College of Charleston for the three-day tournament will be Saint Joseph's and Cleveland State. The team also welcomes in five freshmen, including three who were in Extra Innings Softball Top 100 in Taylor Apple, Kaleigh Ayscue and Devin Long.
