Pirates Fall To Wichita State In Series Finale, 9-1
March 17, 2024 | Softball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Hailey Massaro recorded her first hit as a Pirate, but East Carolina could not generate enough runs to keep pace with Wichita State, falling 9-1 in five innings in the series finale on Sunday afternoon inside Max R. Joyner Family Stadium.
The first inning was once again the tone setter for the rest of the game as the Shockers raced out to a 3-0 lead and the Pirates (21-8, 0-6 AAC) were only able to tally one hit through the first two innings.
Wichita State added two more runs with a two RBI double to extend its lead to 5-0 heading in the top of the third frame. ECU had a chance to gain some momentum in the bottom of the fourth when
Massaro singled and Makenzie Mason and Anna Sawyer each drew walks to load the bases. Massaro would score on a passed ball to get the Pirates on the board, but ECU would strand two runners to end the inning.
The Shockers would hit two homers in the top of the fifth inning to blow the game open and retire three of the four Pirates' batters to secure the run-rule win.
Taylor Apple (6-2) gave up five hits and five runs in the loss.
