Pirates Outlast No. 25 Owls In 14 Innings, 5-4
March 28, 2024 | Softball
Boca Raton, Fla. – Taylor Woodring went 3-for-6 at the plate with three RBI and Logan Sutton hit the go-ahead home run as East Carolina outlasted No. 25 Florida Atlantic 5-4 in 14 innings on Thursday evening in the series opener at FAU Softball Stadium.
Malea Rolle and Morgan Johnson also tallied multi-hit games for the Pirates (25-9, 3-7 AAC) who have won three of their last four league games after starting 0-6 in conference play and have won three of their last four games against ranked teams.
Thursday's win also marks the first time since 2007 that the Pirates have defeated two different ranked opponents within the same season. In 2007, ECU defeated No. 6 California and No. 24 NC State.
Florida Atlantic would get the first run of the game on an RBI single in the first inning, but ECU would eventually go in front 2-1 in the top of the fourth after Emma Jackson's home run and a Woodring RBI double.
An Owls' solo home run would even things at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth, but Woodring continue her stellar night with a two-run bomb to give the Pirates a 4-2 lead in the top of the sixth. The Owls, down to their final two outs, would send the game into extra innings with a two RBI double.
Anna Sawyer would hit a triple in the 10th inning but the Pirates would be unable to score the go-ahead run as both teams would have chances to put the game away in the extra innings. ECU would record double plays to end three of the next four innings and Sutton would hit the go-ahead run over the left field fence in the 14th inning to put ECU in front for good.
Addy Bullis (7-3) picked up the win in the circle for ECU, not allowing a run in her seven innings of work.Â
