Pirates Blanked By North Texas, 5-0
March 08, 2024 | Softball
Denton, Texas – The East Carolina softball team saw its five-game winning streak snapped on Friday evening as the Pirates were shut out by North Texas 5-0 in the conference opener for both teams at Lovelace Stadium.
Morgan Johnson led the Pirates (21-3, 0-1 AAC) at the plate with two hits, the only hits on the night for ECU, whose red-hot offense was shut out for the first time this season.
Both teams would leave a runner on in the first inning, but North Texas was unable to get on the scoreboard first after stealing third and advancing to home on a Pirate throwing error in the bottom of the second.
ECU would have their best chance in the top of the fourth after Johnson singled and Annie Kate Dalton drew a walk to put runners on first and second. The Pirates would eventually load the bases but would hit into a double play to leave two runners on.Â
North Texas would immediately capitalize on the Pirates' missed chance to score runs, plating four runs in the bottom of the fourth to increase its lead to 5-0 and secure its first conference win in the AAC.
Jordan Hatch (9-3) surrendered eight hits and five runs in 3.1 innings of work for the loss. McKenzie Wagoner (6-3) earned the complete game shutout with four strikeouts tossed.
