April 20, 2024 | Softball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina softball team picked up its third conference series win of the season as the Pirates split Saturday's doubleheader with South Florida, falling 1-0 in the first of the twinbill before taking the series with an 8-1 victory in the series finale at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium.
The Pirates (32-16, 9-12 AAC) earned their ninth league win of the season, which marks the most AAC victories in a single season since ECU joined the American prior to the 2015 season. Kylee Schojan also hit her first career home run in the second game, a three-run blast over the center field wall.
Game One: South Florida 1, East Carolina 0
The first game was a pitchers' battle between the two ball clubs as South Florida's sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning brought in the game's lone run to push the Bulls past the Pirates 1-0.
The Pirates only put two hits while the Bulls tallied just three. South Florida stranded seven runners prior to plating the run while the Pirates only had three runners in scoring position through the first four innings.
Payton Dixon (16-6) earned the complete game win in the circle for the Bulls with seven strikeouts tossed while Taylor Apple (11-7) took the loss, tossing three strikeouts and giving up three hits.
Game Two: East Carolina 8, South Florida 1
Morgan Johnson hit her second home run of the series and Taylor Woodring and Kylee Schojan each added a homer of their own as the Pirates sailed past the Bulls 8-1 to win the series in the finale between the two teams.
South Florida hit a solo shot into the batters' eye in the top of the first to start the scoring, but the Pirates answered on Woodring's two-run blast to regain the lead at 2-1 going into the second inning.
ECU would plate another run in the second inning before Johnson's two RBI bomb would blow the game open with the Pirates increasing their lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth. Schojan would add the finishing touches with her three-run homer to make the score 8-1 and clinch the series for the Pirates.
Addy Bullis (11-4) earned her second win of the weekend in the circle.
